What are the secrets to being happier and healthier?

Well, it can seem like a question that’s simple enough to answer, but yet so, so very complicated at the same time. We are all seeking happiness and this goes hand-in-hand with a healthy lifestyle. But thankfully, that’s not a world away if you incorporate a few simple steps. Read on to see our nifty tips on maintaining a happy, healthy lifestyle.

Manage, mitigate and eliminate stress

Stress can be damaging to our health and wellbeing, yet so many of us think we just have to 'suck it up' and deal with it when that’s not the case at all. It is essential to identify the causes of your stress and put measures to manage and ultimately eliminate this sense of pressure.

Take the time to walk away when feeling stressed, take a walk, have a coffee with a friend and find a few minutes to relax doing something you enjoy. A good strategy is to allocate a "worry day" where there is a window of a couple of hours to tackle big things that are causing you stress. That will free you up on the other days if you start to feel overwhelmed just remember it you will deal with it on the allocated day. Be kind to yourself, stay in the present and never be afraid to reach out for help when you are struggling.

Ensure you are getting enough sleep

How much sleep do you think you need to be at your best each day? The average adult needs between seven to nine hours of sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Children (including babies and teenagers) need more. You will find your ability to function will decline over time if you are not getting enough rest, which is highly detrimental to your wellbeing.

Drink plenty of water

The average male should drink around 3.7 litres of water every day. Meanwhile, women should aim for 2.7 litres. Staying hydrated is the essential cornerstone of good health and will also improve your skin, assist in weight management, reduce headaches and migraines and generally improve your body's health.

Take the time to exercise daily

Just 30 minutes of exercise a day will make an enormous difference to your mood, your weight, your energy levels and so much more. Simply taking the dog for a walk or going for a light jog with friends should be on your priority list.

Be the best you that you can be

Forget about everyone else; the only person you need to impress is yourself. Don't waste energy trying to be like anybody else and don't think you have to please or impress anyone else. How you feel every day will stem from how you value yourself and what you think you are worth. Learn to love yourself, and you will be happy every minute of every day.

Finally, be sure to listen to your body. It will tell you when it is exhausted, which means you need to take the time to slow down and give yourself the recovery time your body needs to re-energise.
